RETINAL = LIQUID GOLD

Updated: Apr 16

WHY YOUR RETINOL SHOULD BE YELLOW, TIME RELEASED, and AIRLESS.

Retinol stands as a cornerstone in the realm of skincare, renowned for its effectiveness in tackling various skin concerns. However, navigating the plethora of retinol products available in the market can be daunting. To ensure you invest in the best retinol serum or treatment, understanding key factors is imperative. *For the ease of this article, when referring to retinol in general we will use the term retinol, unless specifically referring to the differences in retinol, retinal, and Retin A.

Firstly, not all retinol formulations are equal, and an essential aspect often overlooked is the color of the product. Genuine retinol is naturally yellow ( retinal ), a characteristic indicating its potency. If your retinol treatment lacks this yellow hue, it is often insufficient to yield noticeable results.

Retinol and retinal, derivatives of vitamin A, holds a prominent place in skincare. It converts into retinoic acid upon skin absorption, effectively addressing concerns like wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage, and uneven skin tone. Also, it aids in acne treatment by regulating sebum production and exfoliating dead skin cells. Often hailed as the "gold standard" or "liquid gold" in skincare, retinol penetrates deep into the skin layers, neutralizing free radicals, stimulating collagen production, and promoting skin renewal.

Understanding the importance of the color of retinol is crucial. Authentic retinol retains its yellow hue, indicating its potency. The brighter the yellow the more potent the retinol. Also note that the bright yellow color cannot be bleached. Many retinol products appearing white may lack the active vitamin A required for efficacy. This could be due to either inadequate initial formulation or breakdown over time. However, while the color serves as a important indicator, it should not be the sole factor in choosing a retinol treatment.

Look for the A! Retinol, retinal, and Retin-A are all derivatives of vitamin A, known for their effectiveness in skincare. Retinol is the most gentle and least effective form, as it requires a double conversion by the skin into retinaldehyde and then into retinoic acid, before becoming useful to the skin. It's less potent but can be somewhat effective for addressing signs of aging and acne. Retinaldehyde, or retinal, is a step closer to retinoic acid and is more potent than retinol, requiring only one conversion step into retinoic acid. It is more effective than retinol but can cause irritation in sensitive skin. On the other hand, Retin-A, also known as tretinoin, is the most potent and direct form of vitamin A. It bypasses the conversion process altogether, making it highly efficacious for treating acne, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. However, its potency also means it's more likely to cause irritation, redness, and peeling especially when first starting its use. Understanding the differences in potency and efficacy of these derivatives can help individuals choose the most suitable option for their skincare needs.

A time-released formulation of retinol/ retinal is significant in skincare due to its ability to deliver the active ingredient gradually over an extended period. Unlike traditional retinol products, which can cause irritation and peeling due to their immediate release, time-released formulations provide a gentler approach to incorporating retinol into a skincare routine. By releasing the retinol slowly, these formulations minimize the risk of irritation while still delivering the benefits of improved skin texture, reduced fine lines, and enhanced collagen production. This controlled release also allows for a more consistent and sustained effect on the skin, maximizing the efficacy of the product over time. Overall, time-released retinol formulations offer a balanced approach to reaping the benefits of vitamin A derivatives without the harsh side effects often associated with traditional retinol products.

Equally significant is the packaging of retinol products. Exposure to light and heat can degrade retinol, rendering it ineffective. Therefore, opting for products housed in opaque, airless containers ensures stability and preserves potency. Given the delicate nature of retinol, packaging plays a pivotal role in maintaining its efficacy over time.

Maximizing the benefits of retinol entails adhering to certain guidelines:

  1. Use retinol exclusively at night to mitigate sun sensitivity.

  2. Apply to completely dry skin, or ensure that any serums ( like Stardust Alchemy ) have completely absorbed.

  3. Apply sunscreen daily with a minimum SPF of 30 to protect against sun damage.

  4. Avoid layering retinol with potent AHAs or BHAs to prevent potential irritation and oxidation.

  5. Refrain from layering multiple retinol-based products to prevent skin inflammation.

  6. Start slow, use our 3x5x7 rule. Starting only 3 nights a week the first week or two, then 5, then 7 if tolerated.

  7. Invest in a quality moisturizer to combat potential dryness and maintain skin hydration. We recommend LUNA LIBRA MILK MOISTURIZER for most skin types and/or SAPPHIRE MOON RITUAL OIL for dry skin types or those craving a luxurious oil. It can be applied on its own, over the top of LUNA LIBRA or 1 pump added to LUNA LIBRA.

Our GOLDEN AURA RETINAL SERUM, delivers in all areas; bright yellow, time released and airless, delivering incredible results. In conclusion, selecting the right retinol product involves considering various factors beyond mere marketing claims. By prioritizing potency, packaging, and usage guidelines, individuals can make informed choices to optimize their skincare regimen and achieve desired results.
